A Loving Tribute to Nicolas Ridout

Former Sugarloaf Fine Arts Camp Director

By Hayden Comer

“Hi Sugarloaf family. It is with a heavy heart that I have to inform you that Nicolas Ridout, our longtime former Camp Director affectionately known as Big Dog passed away in his sleep early this morning. Most of you know that when Nicolas stepped down as camp director he distanced himself from the camp as a whole. He went through some difficult times in the last 12 or so years, but I want to convey that although he was not physically present for camp or in contact with many of his former camp friends, Sugarloaf and all of you was, is, and will always be in his heart, as I’m sure he will be in all of ours.
Per his wishes, there will not be a memorial held for our Big Dog but he did have specific wishes as to the scattering of his ashes in different places which were dear to his heart. This process will be undertaken by myself, my father, and a few other of his dear friends.
I do not have a whole lot of information beyond what I have put into this post, but of course you are always welcome to reach out to me and I will answer questions as best I can. Love to you all and love to our dear Big Dog ❤️”

A Loving Tribute to Maxine Ridout

April 9, 1923 - March 2, 2010

Great Patron of the Arts and Sugarloaf Fine Arts Camp
by Scott Comer

Maxine Ridout, mother of Nicolas (aka Big Dog) and Ron Ridout graduated from this earth March 2, 2010. She was a "founding parent" of Sugarloaf and in the late 1960's, served on the Sugarloaf Station Foundation Board of Directors. Along with raising two boys, Maxine enjoyed her involvement in church activities, teaching piano (she was my teacher), attending the symphony, and retired as the General Manager of a San Francisco Toyota dealership. Maxine loved to bake for her family and friends and no one was left wanting in her presence.

Maxine was a great supporter of Sugarloaf and made it possible for many financially disadvantaged youth to attend Camp. Maxine and family have requested any remembrances to take the form of donations to the Sugarloaf Station Foundation. Maxine, we are grateful to have shared time with you!  May you rest in peace.
